Honey is truly a wonder of nature. It is one of the most valuable, nutrient-rich, and healthiest foods available, and the reasons for this are countless.
But today we will focus on a special property of honey: its antioxidant effect.
Chrysoula Tanakaki, Assistant Professor and Head of the Laboratory for Beekeeping and Silkworm Breeding at the Department of Agriculture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, presented the results of extensive research conducted by the department.
The antioxidant effect of honey
Honey has a strong antioxidant effect. In other words, it fights free radicals, which are responsible for the degeneration of cells that cause cancerous tumors. However, the antioxidant activity of different honeys is not the same. In fact, Manuka honey has gained a reputation for being the best honey in the world, but this is apparently not the case.
Oak honey compared to the rest
The study conducted at AUTH involved selecting and analyzing 48 honey samples from across Greece, representing a variety of flowers. The research included honey from oak, pine, fir, heather, chestnut, thyme, orange, and the renowned exotic manuka.
Each honey had its own unique properties, but the discovery made was unique.
It was found that dark oak honey has the highest antioxidant activity. This is followed by pine honey and paliurus honey.
Thyme honey and orange blossom honey may have an amazing aroma and are therefore preferred by many, but they don't have as much antioxidant activity as the honeys mentioned above. Of course, that doesn't mean they aren't valuable!
Oak honey is more valuable than Manuka honey.
Also impressive was the finding that oak honey is a stronger antioxidant than Manuka honey, which has flooded the world market in recent years due to its biological effects. In fact, Manuka honey has a lower antioxidant capacity than most Greek honeys.
We therefore understand both the great nutritional value of Greek honey and the need to take the necessary measures to ensure that Greek honey takes the place it deserves on the world market.
Black Honey - Oak Honey from Chalkidiki
Description
BLACK HONEY – Premium oak honey from the oak forests of Megali Panagia, Halkidiki
In the heart of the pristine oak forests of Megali Panagia on the Halkidiki peninsula, a honey of exceptional quality is produced. Far removed from industry and intensive agriculture, our bees collect the precious honeydew from ancient oaks and create a rare, dark oak honey with an intense character.
Black honey is characterized by its deep, dark color, robust aroma, and pleasantly malty flavor with subtle notes of caramel, roasted nuts, and forest. Unlike blossom honey, oak honey is produced from honeydew and therefore has a particularly complex composition.
The oak forests surrounding Megali Panagia are among the most pristine woodlands in Northern Greece. The unique microclimate, the pure air, and the rich biodiversity create ideal conditions for the production of this exclusive natural product. Our beekeeping practices work in harmony with nature, harvesting the honey only when it has reached its optimal ripeness.
Oak honey has been prized for centuries for its high content of natural antioxidants and plant polyphenols. It is a high-quality natural product and a special delicacy for all those who love exceptional honeys.
